The
electrode is often used in the alkali solution for electrochemistry
measurement. Example, in the research of Nickel alkaline rechargeable
batteries and alkaline fuel cells, Reference electrode is required
to withstand strong alkali. Alkaline/Mercurous Oxide Reference
Electrode is a kind of electrodes for this purpose.
When
the internal solution is 1M NaOH
HgO + H2O + 2e = Hg + 2OH- E0=0.098 V vs. NHE 25C
D.J.Ives and G.J.Janz, "Reference Electrodes," Academic
Press, New York,1961
The
electrode body is made of Teflon, and the electrode liquid junction
is made of special porous material. Therefore, the electrode
can withstand strong alkaline solution and good conductivity
in eletrochemistry
measurement.
Internal
solution can be freely exchanged. E.g. 1M NaOH, or KOH solution,
even 6M of NaOH or KOH are available.
